The Laney SUPERGRACE-LOUDPEDAL is taking the guitar world by storm, and there are no signs of it slowing down.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"674\">Why is the Laney SUPERGRACE-LOUDPEDAL so popular? Not only can you get Billy Corgan\u2019s iconic guitar amp sound in a pedalboard-friendly format for less than 700 USD (prices correct as of Mar 2026). Yes, you read that right, but the Smashing Pumpkins frontman uses it and actively endorses it. It&#8217;s part of his rig.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"904\">The tone worth \u201c$100,000s\u201d is now widely available to guitar players thanks to the collaboration between Laney, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, and Chicago-based amplifier designer Brian Carstens of Carstens Amplifiers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"954\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/amps\/laney-billy-corgan-supergrace?\">As Billy told Guitar World, the idea was simple<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1045\">\u201cGive the average guitar player the chance to own my live rig. The tone worth $100,000s.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1190\">But how did the project start, what has been the response to the Laney SUPERGRACE-LOUDPEDAL, and does Billy Corgan actually use the pedal live?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1212\">Oh yes. We\u2019re talking multiple amplifiers, boutique equipment and rigs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not ideal if we want to emulate that sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lee Wrathe from Laney explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBilly came to James Laney with a challenge. He said, \u2018I\u2019d love to get my $100,000 guitar rig \u2014 the one that costs tens of thousands of dollars to ship around the world \u2014 into something that the average guitar player could actually buy.\u2019 So we said, \u2018Hold my beer,\u2019 and that\u2019s exactly what we set out to do.\u201d -Lee Wrathe<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At Laney, we\u2019d already released LOUDPEDAL versions of some of our most iconic amplifier ranges, including the LIONHEART and IRONHEART, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laney.co.uk\/blog\/tom-quayle-and-martin-miller-laney-loudpedal-amp-collaboration-the-full-story\/\">signature LOUDPEDAL amps for Tom Quayle and Martin Miller<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"258\" data-end=\"631\">Each LOUDPEDAL unit contains a genuine 60-watt amplifier built directly into the pedal itself. This means the SUPERGRACE-LOUDPEDAL isn\u2019t a modelling device or a digital approximation of Billy Corgan\u2019s tone. We had to nail Billy&#8217;s amplifier tone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3169\" data-end=\"3360\">To recreate Billy Corgan\u2019s sound, Laney\u2019s engineering team went back to one of the most important amplifiers in the company\u2019s history \u2014 the late-1960s Laney Supergroup that Billy Corgan owns.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3362\" data-end=\"3483\">The team mapped the same circuit topology that helped define the sound of early heavy metal and bands like Black Sabbath.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3485\" data-end=\"3518\">But that was only half the story.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3520\" data-end=\"3667\">The other half of the pedal comes from the Carstens Grace amplifier, designed by Brian Carstens and used extensively in Billy Corgan\u2019s touring rig.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3745\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to do a rough approximation of those amps,\u201d Lee Wrathe explains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3747\" data-end=\"3936\">\u201cWe wanted both sides of the pedal to be right. That meant working closely with Brian Carstens himself and making sure the Grace side was exactly what it should be. Lee Wrathe explains how Laney recreated that sound inside the pedal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe best way to get the most amazing tone out of a Supergroup is to literally do that with the dials&#8230;dime it.\u201d-Lee Wrathe<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cranking the amp produces a distinctive behaviour in the output transformer that contributes to the famous Supergroup sound.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen you wind up the volume it starts to do something very strange to the transformer and it gives you a major six subharmonic\u2026 that\u2019s totally the sound of Sabbath.\u201d -Lee Wrathe<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Capturing that behaviour was one of the most important parts of developing the SUPERGRACE-LOUDPEDAL.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt took a lot of work to make that work, but we got there.\u201d -Lee Wrathe<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite its compact size, the SUPERGRACE isn\u2019t a modelling device \u2014 it\u2019s a real 60-watt amplifier built into a pedalboard format.<\/p>\n<p>As Billy Corgan explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is not a digital amp. I&#8217;m the last song of the night with the boys and My Chem. You know, they&#8217;ve obviously got some video roll and they&#8217;re hoping to capture a moment. I&#8217;m thinking this thing better work because it&#8217;s going to be bad if it doesn&#8217;t. But it sounded great. One of the first major appearances came at the TEC Awards, where Billy performed using the pedal in front of a room filled with leading figures from across the music and audio industry.
