But what makes it so good? Why should guitarists use it? Why will they love it? And can analog gearheads like me, make the change? Hint: I did, and I loved it!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this post we\u2019ll be looking at what the Laney LA\u2022IR is, its benefits, how it works in Laney products and gives you some insights from its creator with an exclusive interview with James Morell from Laney.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Laney LA\u2022IR Technology?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Laney LA\u2022IR Technology (Laney\u2019s Advanced Impulse Response) or Laney LA’IR, is an advanced cabinet emulation system that uses 56-bit Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters to replicate the sound of a real miked-up speaker cabinet. Unlike traditional analog or basic digital cabinet simulators, LA\u2022IR employs advanced digital signal processing (DSP) for accurate tone reproduction.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what does that mean for a guitarist like me and you? Unlike traditional cabinet simulators which use analog circuits or basic digital processing where certain frequencies can be affected by the analog path, LA\u2022IR uses advanced DSP (digital signal processing) to exactly replicate the sound and feel of a miked-up speaker cabinet. You get the exact sound you want, every time!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I spoke with James Morrell, one of the brains at Laney behind the LA\u2022IR technology to elaborate on some of the key benefits – take a look!<\/span><\/p>\n

Question: <\/b>James what inspired LA\u2022IR and where do you see it going in the future?<\/span><\/p>\n

When we were developing the LFR-412 we were looking at most common use cases, we saw most users were using Amp modelers, such as the Quad Cortex, Axe FX and Kemper etc. Almost all of them used IR\u2019s for cab emulation, eating up precious DSP blocks. We thought it would be a novel idea you could load your own IR\u2019s into the LFR-412 and alleviate some of the DSP load. Then we realised the IRs were much more versatile and could be used with even more input devices, giving the users more options, and thus after some development LA\u00b7IR was born. We then made it into our standard for IR loading in our products.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In terms of the future, I would like to see us integrate it more into future products, making it more versatile, easier to use and improving on the technology for each iteration. I want to make it a stamp of technology which users get excited to see on a product.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Question: <\/b>James, what\u2019s the difference between LA\u2022IR and traditional IR loaders or cab simulators?<\/p>\n

In terms of the IR (Impulse Responses) there is no difference between ours and the more traditional IR loaders and cab simulators, they work in the same way and can even use the same IR\u2019s. The main difference comes in the application on our DSP devices, we use 56-bit FIR calculations to increase dynamic ranges and reduce truncation or overloading of input signals. And because we do this on bare metal utilising single cycle instructions, it means the latency is super low!<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We run LA\u00b7IR bare metal directly on our DSP, this removes any bloat and latency induced from operating systems or schedulers. Being tightly coupled to the ADC & DAC this allows us to reach a roundtrip latency of less than <500\u33b2, which we think is pretty good.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It comes down to balancing price, features and quality. We wanted the Lionheart Foundry combos to be accessible at a lower price point but with high quality features and sounds. In the real world you can\u2019t have everything at a low price, so we ultimately decided to remove the USB and put the cost savings into the speaker and preamp. We thought this was the better area to focus on, you still get the high quality LA\u00b7IR with our hand picked Laney IR\u2019s, and the speaker and preamp is the best it can be.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One of the biggest challenges in app development is getting it to work on multiple devices! The app will work perfectly on some machines and on others it won\u2019t display correctly, or have strange bugs, it\u2019s a steep learning curve! We are a very small passionate team, of course we would love to add more features in the future, but it will take some time!<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
