FAQ

Can I halve the power of my Laney amplifier by removing two of the power output valves? I still want the great tone I get by turning the amp up, but at a lower volume.

We do not advise using the amplifier in this way. Try using a ‘Hotplate’ style device. This allows you turn turn the amp right up but attenuate the level going to the speakers.

Do you have a user manual for my Laney amplifier?

If your Laney amp is one in current production, then you can find the user manual on the downloads page for the amp. If it is an older Laney amp, then check the website at http://www.laney.co.uk/prod_archive.php. There is a list of older Laney units which we have manuals for. If your amplifier does not appear in this list then please feel free to contact us using the contact form on the Laney website.

Do you know how much my old Laney amplifier is worth?

Unfortunately we do not keep a record of the price of older Laney units. Try looking on Ebay or the Harmony Central website to find out what other users have paid for the amp in the past.

What valves can I use in my Laney amplifier?

We recommend using TAD valves from www.tubeampdoctor.com. What type of valves depends on what amplifier it is – please consult your user manual or see the website to find out what tubes are required.

Do you have an artist endorsement programme? How can I be officially endorsed by Laney?

Please send an email with all of your details to ar@laney.co.uk.

How do i operate the standby and power switches for best performance?

Here is the correct procedure for switching the amp on and off : Switch on : Ensure the standby and power switch are off - both down, in the same position. Plug in the amp and switch on at the main power outlet. Switch the power switch on the amp ON (up, towards the power LED) Wait between 30 and 60 seconds. Switch the standby switch to run (up, same position as the power switch) Switch off : Switch the standby switch to standby (opposite to the above!) Switch the power switch on the amp off (down, away from the power LED) Unplug the amp from the main power outlet.

I want to do a custom modification to my Laney amp. Can you help?

Unfortunately we do not offer advice on custom mods to our amplifiers, although your local amp tech may be able to help out. Bear in mind that any custom mods will probably invalidate your warranty.

I have tried to download a manual for my Laney amp, but it does not work. Why?

Please ensure you are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat

I'm really interested in developing and building my own amplifier. Can you offer any hints and tips?

Unfortunately we could spend hours replying to this email (and we don't really have time, too much work!). There are numerous websites around with other old schematics and build techniques for you to look over too. (Try http://www.schematicheaven.com/ and http://www.duncanamps.com/technical/speaker_cab.html as a good starting point to learn more.). Good luck and have fun!

My tubes are glowing blue. Should I worry?

No. Blue glow is perfectly normal. It's an artifact of operation of the tube. If the amp is otherwise working fine, relax and don't worry about it all.

Does the blue glow mean my tubes are 'gassy'?

No. Gassy tubes are characterized by excessive grid currents and other poor performance characteristics. Extremely gassy tubes may glow with a pinkish cast throughout the entire tube. A faint blue glow on the glass, or inside the plate structure is completely normal. In fact tubes exhibiting this glow are frequently lower in residual gas.

My amp cuts out sometimes. When it does, I see the tubes stop glowing momentarily. Does this mean I should change my tubes?

Tubes will usually glow blue when the tube is in operation with voltage applied. When you cut the standby switch off, this interrupts the voltage applied to the output tubes, and they stop glowing. If your amp has a problem and the sound cuts out, taking the glow with it, the problem is not caused by the glow. The glow interruption is merely a symptom of whatever is causing your amp to cut out in the first place
